New
Zealand South Island 2015
A return visit
to the fabulous South Island over 10 days to explore some of the
country not travelled before. I landed in Christchurch and drove
south on SH1 through the Canterbury Plains to spend time, firstly
in Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula, then the scenic route
through The Catlins to Invercargill, New Zealand's most
southerly, and westerly, city.
My objective was to observe
and photograph an atmospheric phenomenon rarely reported or photographed from the southern
hemisphere. I did not succeed, but I enjoyed the laid-back quality of life,
fresh seafood and the beautiful scenery. As a consolation prize I was lucky to
witness an unexpected display of
aurora australis and some unseasonally warm and dry weather.
A trip to
Stewart Island and on to Ulva Island to explore the magical cool-temperate rain forest and bird
sanctuary was the highlight. Some birds
I saw on my travels.

below for some of the sights I enjoyed over
the short break.
