Canterbury The Canterbury region is an area on New Zealand's South Island centred on the city of Christchurch which includes much of the Canterbury Plains and the surrounding mountains. Rivers in the region have a characteristic braided appearance due to the gentle fall to the Pacific Ocean. Major towns include Ashburton, Oamaru and Waimate.
