The Virgo Galaxy Cluster in the region of M87; Virgo A wide-field view of part of what is arguably the finest nearby galaxy cluster in the sky containing an estimated 2000 members. This view contains the giant elliptical M87 (left of centre), most of the galaxies making up Markarian's Chain (featuring M86 and M84, upper right), NGC4531 (upper left) and NGC4371 (bottom right), the beautiful little face-on barred spiral, NGC4440 (below centre) and dozens of other cluster members and numerous more distant galaxies. Note the interacting pair of NGC4438 (very distorted) and NGC4435. distance ~55Mly. Here are close-ups of M87, M86 and NGC 4438 taken from the image below.
