The Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

Discovered by Harlow Shapley in 1938, it is one of the Milky Way's satellite galaxies about 460,000 ly distant and is classed as dwarf elliptical. It contains six globular clusters (all visible in this image), which is an unexpectedly high number for a galaxy of its size; one, NGC 1049, visible on the outskirts below the galaxy was discovered prior to the galaxy itself.
