Stewart Island

An hour's ferry ride from Bluff and you arrive at Oban, Stewart Island's main town. My main purpose for travelling to the island was to go to another island, Ulva, fifteen minutes by water taxi away. Ulva Island is a gem containing much old cool-temperate rainforest and is designated a floral and faunal sanctuary. A number of endemic bird species endangered on the mainland have been relocated to the island and there is an on-going programme to strictly maintain an environment free of predators, such as rats, mice, cats and dogs. The weather was warm and sunny, just perfect for a day out in the fresh air and sounds of nature.

Here are some birds I photographed.

Oban township on the shore of Halfmoon Bay. A small town but sufficient to meet the needs of the Island community

One of the many fabulous views of the Stewart Island coastline. This one over Golden Bay the departure point for Ulva Island

Police Station - small but adequate

The Ulva Island bay and pier where passengers disembark from the water taxi

Well defined tracks lead through the beautiful forest of Ulva Island
