C/2015 G2 (MASTER)

Discovered on 2015 April 7 by astronomers supporting the MASTER project at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO); the first comet to be discovered from South Africa for 35 years. It passed within 0.78 AU of the Sun on 2015 May 23 and will never return after likely ejection from the solar system.

Through May 2015 it was very well-placed for southern hemisphere observers as it raced through Fornax, Eridanus and into Lepus.

Photographed from the dark skies of Heathcote against the stars of Eridanus on 2015 May 16 when around magnitude 6.5. Note the beautiful teal-coloured coma and tail extending to the edge of the field.
