Jinjellic Bird Camp, New Year 2012

A trip to the far north east of Victoria, over the Murray River into New South Wales and on to the community of Jingellic was the destination for the 2012 New Year Camp. It was a pleasant site situated on the banks of the Murray on farmland that had been cleared of cattle for our stay. Though the evidence of recent occupation was plain to see all around, on the ground! An advantage for any camper feeling a little homesick for Victoria was that the "homeland" was just 30m across the shallow water. Many did not partake, but I enjoyed finishing the day's activities with a cooling "bath" in the Murray - fresh water, but not that clean due to the suspended matter. Others enjoyed the river with these.

Again, as in previous camps, it was just wonderful waking up to the sounds of birds calling all around - white-throated gerygone are my favourite.

It was a successful camp as judged by the number of birds recorded over the seven days - around 143 bird species.
