24th August 2005

An M-class flare erupted from sunspot group 798 on the 22nd August producing auroral storm conditions on the evening of the 24th August 2005Observed between 9pm and 9:50pm from beside a main road to the south of Melbourne, the aurora appeared as a moderately bright glow reaching to about 10º elevation. I couldn't discern any colour in the glow or above or see any structure due to light pollution and interference from car headlights affecting night adapted vision.

Here are two of my images taken during the evening of the 24th August 2005.

9:39pm, overlooking farmland to the SSE a green glow above low lying clouds; Nikon CoolPix 4500 camera @ ISO400; 20s exposure.

9:41pm, photo details as above.
